Nudibranchs are coming
Unless you are a diver, there is no reason for you to know what a nudibranch is. Should the name arouse your curiosity, this terrific link will give you a quick lesson on just how amazing they are: <http://www.richard-seaman.com/Underwater/Philippines/Nudibranchs/index.html> The short version is that they are small marine creatures, sometimes called sea slugs - a name that belies their outrageous colors, shapes, and configurations. I have loved them ever since I started diving as a kid, and have always been amazed by their variety and form. I think I might be the first sculptor to immortalize the nudibranch in stone - in the case pictured, I am using a yellow Persian travertine, which lends itself wonderfully to express the unbelievable colors one finds in nudibranchs. The roughed out form, with the typical two horns at one end and the gill cluster at the other, begins to take shape on my carving table. This will be one of a series of nudibranchs I am carving out of various exotic stones.
